Brighton’s very rare and unloved post box

Replete with graffiti and nestled up to a bin, the post box at the corner of Montpelier Road and Western Road is one of only two of its kind in the country and is grade II listed.

The first pillar boxes were erected at St Helier,¬†Jersey at the recommendation of Anthony Trollope¬†who was then working as a Surveyor’s Clerk for the Post Office. This example was erected in 1859 and is of the First National Standard design.
