6th May 1999: Job cuts at Body Shop HQ

The Body Shop axed 300 jobs in Littlehampton.

Chief executive Patrick Gournay revealed that 200 jobs would go at the head office, with 100 more chopped at the manufacturing and distribution operations.

Five months earlier, joint chairman Gordon Roddick, husband of company founder Anita, had said: “Anita and I have a very solid commitment to Littlehampton. We both love the town and wish to see it grow and prosper.”

The Body Shop retail empire started in Kensington Gardens, Brighton in 1976. Anita Roddick died in 2007.
